In a landmark moment for the Himalayan region, Nima Goos Goos — a women-owned and women-led food startup based in Ladakh — has become the first enterprise of its kind from the state to raise equity funding.
The company, which specialises in handcrafted herbal tisanes and small-batch artisanal condiments, closed an investment round backed by OYO Founder Ritesh Agarwal, Ahaana Ventures’ Sonali Mehta-Rao, and Mumbai-based angel investor Anushi Mehta.
This marks a turning point for the high-altitude region’s startup ecosystem, especially for women-led micro enterprises working at the intersection of culture, community, and commerce.
A regenerative food brand rooted in Himalayan tradition
Co-founded by Padma Angmo and Rigzin Angmo, Nima Goos Goos — which means “sunflower” in Ladakhi — sources wild-harvested and organic ingredients from remote villages, in collaboration with women farmers and foragers.
The brand combines ancestral culinary wisdom with modern food innovation, producing a line of herbal tisanes, pestos, chutneys, and preserves that reflect Ladakh’s rich biodiversity and sustainable food heritage.
“This is more than just funding — it’s a movement to reclaim and reimagine Himalayan food systems, led by the very women who’ve preserved them for generations,” said the co-founders.
Scaling up: A food processing unit and a global brand in the making
With this equity infusion, Nima Goos Goos will establish Ladakh’s first women-owned food processing and packaging unit in Leh. The startup plans to onboard hundreds of women cultivators by 2026, creating a decentralized supply network and bringing stable income opportunities to remote communities.
Early interest from retailers in Japan, Europe, and premium Indian hospitality brands has validated the brand’s global potential. The company’s vision includes launching an international tisane line, representing indigenous healing blends in a global wellness market.
Investor Sonali Mehta-Rao called the brand “a remarkable convergence of tradition, biodiversity, and women-led innovation,” while Alsisar Impact, an early supporter, said the startup exemplifies frontier entrepreneurship built on climate resilience and local value chains.
Frontier entrepreneurship with cultural and ecological impact
Nima Goos Goos isn’t just another organic brand — it’s redefining place-based entrepreneurship. By positioning Himalayan food as both a climate-positive and culturally rooted product category, the startup is setting a new benchmark for rural innovation in India.
Its success sends a powerful signal to policy leaders and investors: regions like Ladakh — often viewed as remote and fragile — can in fact lead the way in sustainable, inclusive entrepreneurship, especially when women are at the forefront.
