Coal Gasification Roadshow Eyes 100 MT Target

Must Read

The Ministry of Coal, in collaboration with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), is set to host the 2nd Roadshow on Coal Gasification – Surface and Underground Technologies in New Delhi. The event is part of India’s strategic push toward cleaner energy solutions and sustainable industrial growth through domestic innovation and policy reform.

To be held at FICCI Federation House, the event will feature Union Minister of Coal and Mines, Shri G. Kishan Reddy, as the Chief Guest, and Minister of State, Shri Satish Chandra Dubey, as Guest of Honour. The roadshow comes on the heels of the recently launched 13th round of commercial coal mine auctions, designed to encourage industrial use of coal under a more liberalised framework.

Pushing the coal gasification mission: 100 MT target by 2030

India has set an ambitious national target of 100 million tonnes (MT) of coal gasification by 2030. Coal gasification, which converts coal into cleaner forms like syngas, methanol, and ammonia, is being positioned as a key transition pathway in India’s energy mix — supporting both environmental goals and energy security.

The roadshow will deliberate on:

  • Scaling up both surface and underground coal gasification technologies

  • Creating viable business models to attract private sector participation

  • Advancing indigenous R&D for commercial-scale deployment

  • Evolving policy frameworks for marketing coal-derived products like urea, methanol, and hydrogen

  • Exploring financial support mechanisms for pilot and early-stage projects

Cross-sectoral participation and investor engagement

The event is expected to draw stakeholders from multiple high-impact sectors, including:

  • Chemical and Petrochemical

  • Oil & Gas

  • Steel and Aluminium

  • Power and Mining

  • Banking and Investment

This cross-sector dialogue is aimed at unlocking new investment opportunities, de-risking coal gasification ventures, and building public–private partnerships to achieve India’s energy and industrial goals.

Importantly, the event also creates a platform for MSMEs in engineering, services, and clean tech to explore value chain opportunities in auxiliary components, maintenance, and instrumentation.

Coal gasification as a pillar of self-reliant energy

Coal gasification allows the country to shift from direct combustion of coal to value-added usage, aligning with both decarbonisation and Atmanirbhar Bharat goals. Products derived from gasification — such as methanol and urea — reduce reliance on imports, while creating new manufacturing and export pathways.

By supporting domestic technology development, ensuring viability gap funding, and simplifying policy approvals, the government aims to position India as a global hub for clean coal technologies.

This second roadshow is expected to refine the implementation roadmap and build investor confidence to accelerate projects already in the pipeline.
