In a strategic move to bolster India’s telecom research capabilities, the Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC)—the technical arm of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT)—has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Naya Raipur. The agreement will see both institutions collaborate on cutting-edge research, innovation, and standardisation in next-generation telecom technologies.
Focus Areas: Open RAN, 6G, IoT and Cognitive Radio
The partnership will prioritise multiple frontier technologies. A key area is Open Radio Access Networks (Open RAN) and network disaggregation. Joint efforts will focus on developing open interfaces, modular system architecture, and virtualisation, all while ensuring multi-vendor interoperability.
Another area of focus is cognitive radio and spectrum sharing, aligned with global spectrum management policies, particularly in view of the World Radiocommunication Conference 2027 (WRC-27).
Additionally, the collaboration aims to advance research in 5G, 6G, and IoT frameworks, including the establishment of robust testbeds to simulate future telecom environments.
India-Specific Standards and Global Participation
One of the standout goals of the partnership is the creation of India-specific testing frameworks and standards. These will be tailored to the country’s diverse connectivity needs, aiming to ensure affordability, interoperability, and scalability.
Both TEC and IIIT Naya Raipur will also contribute to global and national standardisation bodies such as the ITU-T Study Groups and TEC’s National Working Groups, allowing India to play a more active role in international telecom policymaking.
Supporting Atmanirbhar Bharat and 6G Vision
The initiative is closely aligned with the Indian government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) mission, as it fosters indigenous R&D, design, and development in the telecom sector. The collaboration will help accelerate innovation in emerging technologies, paving the way for affordable, vendor-neutral solutions that suit India’s unique market.
By preparing the groundwork for 6G and advanced IoT, this MoU represents a crucial step in making India a global telecom innovation hub.
