AEPC (Apparel Export Promotion Council of India) undertakes Sustainable Manufacturing Practices in Garment’s Division

The Apparel Export Promotion Council of India (AEPC) to boost its exports through sustainable manufacturing practices in garment division across India.

Manufacturing process require huge amount energy and natural resources and that accounts to be a costly affair and sometimes environmentally hazardous.

To reduce impact of cost, remain environmentally friendly and benefits of sustainability business practices manufacturers of all sectors are trying to minimize the negative environmental impact. Therefore, they are turning to sustainable business practice and creating products that are safe, requires less consumption of energy and remain globally competitive.

AEPC is holding a series of talks with all stakeholders regarding the use of environment friendly technologies in order to reduce carbon emission in different garment clusters of the country.

The Exporters body hold talks on May 15th saying they are in talks with multiple stakeholders, including brands, associations, and industry, the association is promoting sustainable manufacturing practice to boost exports from the country.
AEPC council is informing the industry about adopting sustainability practice via conservation of water and energy management, waste management, monitoring of carbon emission, and certification for green building. The council said in its statement.

APEC pointed out that it has initiated AISA (Apparel Industry Sustainability Action) to promote such manufacturing practices.

This initiative assumes significance, as the European Union (EU), a key export destination for India, has decided to impose carbon tax on imported goods if their manufacturing process involves polluting practices.

The Export Promotion body hosted a series of road shows at various garment clusters across India from May 5 to 12.

AEPC Chairman Naren Goenka said ‘the objective of these road shows was to map the existing sustainability status across clusters and to give them an opportunity to showcase their sustainability measures to reputed brands, document best stories pan India to showcase them to global buyers and brands’.

“The takeaways of road shows will help us to have a policy dialogue with the government for suitable policy interventions for supporting MSMEs for better preparedness in the changing scenario,” he said.

Sudhir Sekhri, Vice Chairman AEPC said the global garment production is expected to increase by 63% by 2030, with a huge contribution by the Indian garment industry.

“This spectacular growth brings with it an ever-growing global concern on the detrimental impact that this fashion industry brings on the environment,” Sekhri said.

AEPC has partnered with Brands and Sourcing Leaders Association (BSL) for this initiative, which has plans to award companies that have made strides in the sustainability domain.
