Amazon India to Showcase Visakhapatnam’s Tribal Artisans on Global Stage

Must Read

Amazon India has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Visakhapatnam Forest Tribals. This partnership aims to help tribal artisans from Visakhapatnam sell their handcrafted products globally. By providing an e-commerce platform, Amazon offers these artisans a chance to reach a wider audience.

The key focus is to offer visibility and generate revenue through the forest produce crafted by the tribals. Listing these products on Amazon will create job opportunities and boost local economies. This initiative aligns with Amazon’s broader efforts to support local artisans.

Empowering Artisans through E-commerce

Amazon’s Karigar program will play a crucial role in this partnership. The program is designed to train tribal members in the packaging and branding of their goods. This training will ensure that their products meet the standards required for online sales.

An e-commerce hub will be established within the tribal area of Visakhapatnam Forest. This hub will handle various activities including primary and secondary packaging, storage, dispatch, and order processing. These steps are vital to ensuring the efficient operation of the e-commerce platform.

Focus on Non-Consumable Forest Produce

Initially, the project will focus on the online sale of non-consumable forest produce. Products such as grass-woven mats, elephant dung paper, and bamboo utensils will be featured. These unique items reflect the rich heritage and craftsmanship of the tribal community.

Speaking about the MoU, Gaurav Bhatnagar, Director, Seller Acquisition and Development, Amazon India, said, “By joining hands with the Visakhapatnam Forest Tribals and expanding our Karigar Program’s reach, we are enriching the Amazon marketplace with authentic handcrafted products and upholding the legacy of age-old traditions.”

Benefits for the Tribal Community

The partnership with Amazon India is expected to bring significant benefits to the tribal community in Visakhapatnam. This initiative is more than just a business arrangement; it represents a crucial step towards social and economic empowerment for the tribal artisans. By providing a platform for these artisans to sell their products online, Amazon is opening up new avenues for income and growth. This move is likely to have a transformative impact on their lives and communities.

Anant Shankar, District Forest Officer of Visakhapatnam, emphasized the positive implications of this collaboration. He stated, “Our collaboration with Amazon India will significantly benefit the tribal community residing in the heart of the Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary in Visakhapatnam district, Andhra Pradesh. This partnership will enable them to showcase their craftsmanship to a broader audience, thereby enhancing their living standards.” His words highlight the potential for this partnership to bring about substantial improvements in the quality of life for these artisans.

Moreover, by showcasing their craftsmanship to a global audience, the tribal artisans can preserve and sustain their traditional practices. These crafts, which have been passed down through generations, are an integral part of their cultural heritage. The opportunity to sell their products online not only helps in generating income but also ensures that these traditional skills are kept alive. The increased demand for their unique products will encourage younger generations to learn and continue these crafts, thereby preserving their cultural identity.

Amazon’s Karigar Program

Launched in 2017, Amazon’s Karigar program is designed to support small businesses and micro-entrepreneurs, including weavers and artisans. The program aims to empower these traditional craftsmen by giving them access to Amazon’s vast e-commerce platform. This access allows them to grow their businesses and reach a global customer base.

The Karigar program has a significant impact, benefiting over 18 lakh artisans across India. By providing a marketplace for their goods, Amazon helps these artisans generate sustainable income and preserve their traditional crafts. The program offers a wide selection of handmade products, ensuring that customers have access to authentic and high-quality items.

The range of products available through the Karigar program is diverse. It includes handloom textiles, intricate handicrafts, and hand-processed beauty and gourmet items. Each product reflects the unique skills and cultural heritage of the artisans who create them. The program features over 470 distinct arts and crafts from different regions of India, showcasing the country’s rich artistic traditions.

Through the Karigar initiative, Amazon continues to support and promote the diverse crafts and cultures of India. The program not only provides a platform for artisans to sell their products but also offers training in areas such as packaging, branding, and online sales. This training helps artisans enhance the quality and marketability of their products.

Additionally, Amazon collaborates with various government emporiums and NGOs to expand the reach of the Karigar program. These partnerships ensure that more artisans can benefit from the opportunities provided by e-commerce. By working together, they help artisans maintain their livelihoods and contribute to the preservation of India’s cultural heritage.

Expanding Reach and Impact

Over the years, Amazon has partnered with more than 30 government emporiums and five government NGOs. These partnerships have helped artisans reach customers online, further expanding the program’s impact. By working with these organizations, Amazon ensures that the artisans’ products receive the visibility they deserve.

Amazon India’s collaboration with Visakhapatnam’s tribal artisans is a significant step towards preserving traditional crafts. By providing training and an e-commerce platform, Amazon helps these artisans reach a global audience. This initiative will not only promote their unique products but also improve their economic conditions and sustain their cultural heritage.
