India is making major strides in electronics manufacturing, with the country now exporting high-end electronic components to global markets, Union Minister for Railways, Electronics, and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
Highlighting the government’s push for domestic production, Vaishnaw stated that India is moving towards self-sufficiency in electronic components, sub-assemblies, and capital equipment, reducing reliance on imports.
“India is approaching new frontiers in electronics manufacturing. We aim to achieve exports and increase value addition via this well-planned move,” he wrote.
PLI and ‘Make in India’ Driving Export Growth
The Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) 2.0 scheme and Make in India initiative have played a pivotal role in strengthening India’s position as a global electronics supplier. By encouraging domestic production, the schemes have helped manufacturers scale up operations and compete internationally.
Vaishnaw also showcased a “Designed in India, Made in India” laptop as a symbol of India’s growing capabilities in hardware development and innovation. The post underscored the country’s commitment to becoming a hub for high-end technology manufacturing.
India’s Semiconductor Ambitions
The minister further announced that the first ‘Made in India’ semiconductor chip would be ready for production this year, marking a significant milestone in India’s semiconductor ecosystem.

Rapid Growth in Electronics Manufacturing
India’s electronics sector has seen a fourfold growth over the last decade, with total production rising from ₹2.4 lakh crore in 2014 to ₹9.8 lakh crore in 2024.
- Mobile manufacturing has surged, with 98 percent of smartphones used in India now produced domestically.
- Smartphones have become the country’s fourth-largest export item, further reinforcing India’s position as a key global electronics player.
- The PLI 2.0 scheme for IT hardware, launched just 18 months ago, has already generated ₹10,000 crore in production and created 3,900 jobs.
Building a Self-Reliant Electronics Industry
With initiatives like PLI and ‘Make in India’, the government aims to position India as a leading electronics and semiconductor manufacturing hub. By focusing on high-value exports, advanced hardware design, and local production, India is moving closer to its goal of self-reliance in electronics manufacturing while strengthening its global trade footprint.
