ONDC Onboards 125 Ecosystem Stakeholders to Democratize E-commerce

The Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), an initiative aimed at democratizing e-commerce and making digital commerce accessible to smaller players, recently announced the onboarding of 125 ecosystem stakeholders. These stakeholders include a mix of startups and some of India’s best-known unicorns. This development marks a significant step in ONDC’s mission to level the playing field in the e-commerce sector.

Key Unicorn Partnerships

Among the unicorns that have signed Letters of Intent (LoI) to partner with ONDC are:

  • EaseMyTrip
  • Pristyn Care
  • Cars24
  • Physics Wallah
  • PolicyBazaar
  • OfBusiness
  • Winzo
  • Livspace
  • GlobalBees

This collaboration is intended to ensure that startups can access the network to reach broader markets and offer consumers a wider choice and better value. Rajesh Kumar Singh, Secretary in the Department of Industry and Internal Trade, highlighted the importance of this initiative during the ONDC Startup Mahotsav, a hybrid event that saw participation from 5,000 startups.

Expanding E-commerce to Underserved Towns

One of the primary goals of these partnerships is to extend e-commerce services to smaller towns that are currently underserved. By collaborating with ONDC, these unicorns and startups aim to penetrate markets that have traditionally been beyond their reach. This expansion can provide local businesses in these towns with new opportunities and greater access to the broader digital economy.

The ONDC initiative is designed to offer inclusive market access to all kinds of sellers, from SMEs to larger businesses. Singh emphasized that the collaboration aims to provide a wider choice and better value to consumers by incorporating diverse sellers into the network. This inclusivity is expected to foster healthy competition and innovation within the e-commerce space.

Addressing Concerns of Market Concentration

While there are concerns that larger startups might overshadow smaller players on the ONDC platform, Singh expressed optimism about the initiative’s potential to attract a diverse range of participants. He acknowledged the need to monitor and address any issues related to market concentration, stating that the intent behind ONDC is noble and aims to benefit all types of players in the e-commerce ecosystem.

Since its launch in 2021, ONDC has made significant strides in transforming the e-commerce landscape in India. The platform has onboarded more than 500,000 sellers, with over 70% being small or medium-sized enterprises. In April 2024 alone, ONDC facilitated around 7.22 million transactions, highlighting its growing influence and reach.

Integration with Startup India Initiative

The onboarding of startups to ONDC brings together two of the government’s key initiatives: ONDC and the Startup India Initiative. Launched in 2016, the Startup India Initiative aims to support entrepreneurs and build a robust startup ecosystem in the country. From a modest beginning with around 300 startups in 2016, India now boasts over 130,000 DPIIT-recognized startups across more than 55 sectors, creating over 130,000 direct jobs.
