A startup incubated at IIT Guwahati has developed AI-powered autonomous robots for real-time surveillance along India’s international borders. This cutting-edge defence technology, created by Da Spatio Rhobotique Laboratory Pvt Ltd (DSRL), is currently undergoing field trials with the Indian Army for potential deployment in high-risk and sensitive areas.
AI-Driven Surveillance to Enhance Border Security
The newly developed robotic surveillance system is designed to navigate complex terrains, operate autonomously, and provide continuous monitoring—a significant upgrade from traditional border security methods that rely on stationary cameras, drones, and manual patrols.
According to Arnab Kumar Barman, CEO of DSRL, the system integrates multiple sensors for intelligence gathering and threat detection, making it adaptable to changing environmental conditions. Unlike conventional systems that may struggle in adverse weather or challenging landscapes, these robots are designed to function with high endurance and precision.
Defence Research and Field Trials
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has acknowledged the strategic potential of this technology. As part of its evaluation process, the Indian Army is conducting field trials to determine the system’s effectiveness in detecting security threats, preventing infiltration, and monitoring critical infrastructure.
Keyur Sorathia, Head of IIT Guwahati’s Technology Incubation Centre, emphasized the significance of these trials, highlighting that the adoption of such AI-driven defence solutions would mark a major step towards indigenous technological advancements in national security.
