Udyam, UAP Cross 6.6 Cr MSME Registrations

Must Read

The Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) has reported that 6.63 crore MSMEs have been registered across India on the Udyam Registration Portal and Udyam Assist Platform (UAP) between 1st July 2020 and 31st July 2025, signaling rapid progress in India’s MSME formalisation journey.

The registrations reflect a broader national push to empower small businesses through a suite of targeted schemes such as PMEGP, RAMP, PM Vishwakarma, and the Credit Guarantee Scheme. Together, these have helped generate 28.73 crore employment opportunities in the same period, according to official data.

Background: Udyam and UAP fuel ease of doing business

Launched in July 2020, the Udyam Registration Portal simplified MSME classification and formalisation. The subsequent launch of the Udyam Assist Platform (UAP) expanded this effort to bring Informal Micro Enterprises (IMEs) under the formal umbrella, especially those not registered under GST.

UAP enables micro businesses — street vendors, artisans, retailers — to receive Udyam Assist Certificates, giving them access to:

  • Priority Sector Lending (PSL)

  • Government incentives and public procurement

  • Banking and credit services

  • Entry into digital payments and fintech ecosystems

With over 2.75 crore certificates issued via UAP, the initiative has become a gamechanger for India’s informal sector.

Schemes Driving MSME Growth

Alongside registration, the government has rolled out several impactful schemes to address credit gaps, market access, employment, and technology needs. Key highlights include:

  • PM Vishwakarma Scheme: Launched in 2023, provides holistic support to artisans in 18 traditional trades

  • Credit Guarantee Scheme: Revamped with ₹9,000 crore infusion to enable ₹2 lakh crore in fresh credit to MSEs

  • Self-Reliant India (SRI) Fund: Equity infusion of ₹50,000 crore to help viable MSMEs scale operations

  • PMEGP expansion: Project cost limits raised to ₹50 lakh (manufacturing) and ₹20 lakh (services), enhancing reach

  • TReDS platform: Facilitates faster invoice payments for MSMEs from corporates and government buyers

These are complemented by initiatives like Tool Rooms, TCSP Centres, and the National SC/ST Hub, making the support landscape more inclusive and accessible.

Employment, formalisation, and credit inclusion

As of July 2025, over 28.73 crore jobs have been linked to Udyam-registered enterprises. This reaffirms the MSME sector’s role as the largest employment generator in India after agriculture.

The government’s emphasis on formalisation with minimal friction, combined with collateral-free credit (up to ₹10 crore with 90% guarantee), is helping micro businesses scale, digitise, and compete — both domestically and globally.

From small traders to rural craftsmen, more entrepreneurs are now entering the formal economy, accessing structured financing and skilling pathways.

What’s next: Integrated, digital-first MSME support

The MSME Ministry is now focused on deeper integration of Udyam platforms with digital lending, skilling, and supply chain platforms. Collaborations with fintechs, banks, and e-commerce marketplaces are expected to further reduce barriers for small businesses.

As India eyes a $5 trillion economy, empowering its 6.63 crore MSMEs with policy clarity, digital access, and financial tools will be key to unlocking growth, jobs, and local innovation.
