India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has achieved a new milestone, crossing 500 million consumers and 65 million merchants nationwide, according to a joint report by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and the Boston Consulting Group (BCG). The study, launched during the Global Fintech Fest 2025, highlights UPI’s pivotal role in advancing digital inclusion, small business growth, and access to credit.
The platform, developed by NPCI, now covers nearly 99% of India’s pin codes—reflecting deep penetration across both urban and rural regions. Beyond simplifying digital payments, UPI has emerged as a key enabler of financial formalisation, allowing micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to access instant, secure, and traceable transactions.
Driving Economic Growth Through Digital Payments
The report reveals that in areas with high UPI adoption, lending to enterprises has increased more than fourfold between FY23 and FY25. Similarly, consumer durable loans have grown tenfold and personal loans by 4.4 times—underscoring how digital payments are driving wider financial participation.
Merchants have also benefited from tools like the UPI Soundbox, which streamlines transaction verification and improves operational efficiency. These innovations are helping small businesses reduce costs, improve transparency, and strengthen creditworthiness through formal transaction records.
Expanding the Digital Ecosystem for MSMEs
UPI’s evolution continues through innovations such as UPI LiteX for offline payments, tap-and-pay features, credit card integration, and UPI Autopay. Together, these products are helping India transition toward a fully digital, cash-lite economy that empowers individuals and entrepreneurs alike.
Industry leaders note that UPI’s rapid growth has created a foundation for new financial products, from micro-loans to digital insurance. For MSMEs, especially those in semi-urban and rural regions, UPI has become a catalyst for growth, helping them tap into formal financial systems and expand their customer base.
