Postal Exports Get Incentive Boost for MSMEs

Must Read

India has expanded export incentives to shipments sent through the postal channel, a move expected to significantly ease cross-border trade for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), artisans and small exporters who rely on low- and mid-value international consignments.

The Department of Posts (DoP), under the Ministry of Communications, has operationalised the extension of Duty Drawback, RoDTEP and RoSCTL benefits for exports routed through the postal network, effective 15 January 2026, following notifications issued by the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC).

Why This Matters for Small Exporters

For years, exporters using courier or cargo routes could access export incentives, while those shipping through the postal channel were largely excluded. This gap disproportionately affected MSMEs, handicraft sellers, homegrown brands and start-ups that depend on India Post for cost-effective international deliveries.

With export benefits now available through the postal route, exporters can recover duties and taxes, improve working capital liquidity, and price their products more competitively in global markets. Combined with automated IGST refunds already in place, the move reduces both financial strain and procedural friction.

Dak Ghar Niryat Kendras Power the Shift

Exports through the postal channel are enabled via Dak Ghar Niryat Kendras (DNKs), a joint initiative of the Department of Posts and CBIC. At present, 1,013 DNKs are operational across India, providing exporters with end-to-end services including booking, digital documentation and customs clearance under one roof.

This network allows exporters from remote towns and underserved regions to access international markets without relying on private logistics providers or complex export infrastructure.

System Upgrades and Digital Integration

To support the rollout, system enhancements have been implemented across the DNK Self-Service Portal and Customs platforms. Clear Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) have also been issued for exporters and field officials to ensure smooth processing of incentive claims.

These changes align with the objectives of the Foreign Trade Policy 2023, which emphasises ease of doing business, digitalisation and promotion of cross-border e-commerce.

End-to-End Export Support via India Post

India Post now offers a single-window export solution covering pick-up, documentation, online payments, faceless customs clearance and real-time tracking. Services such as the International Tracked Packet Service (ITPS), available in 135 countries, provide MSMEs with a reliable and affordable option for global shipping.

By leveraging its vast physical network and digital platforms, the postal system is emerging as a critical export enabler for small businesses, bridging the access gap between domestic entrepreneurs and international buyers.

Strengthening MSME Participation in Global Trade

The extension of export incentives through the postal channel is expected to accelerate MSME participation in global trade, particularly in categories such as handicrafts, apparel, lifestyle products, specialty foods and direct-to-consumer e-commerce.

For small exporters, the message is clear: global markets are now more accessible, less expensive and better aligned with India’s push for inclusive export growth.
